  As a Border Control Supervisor at the Ashford Inland Border Facility (HMRC IBF), I headed up a team that was responsible for checking vehicles and documents to determine if the vehicle was safe to drive and if the driver had the correct paperwork to be able to continue to customs. The role meant that I needed a great understanding of customs documents, and communication skills to be able to converse with the drivers so that they understood what they need needed to cross the border back into Europe. My role included: • Duty management: Responsible for a team of 20 operatives checking the export paperwork to assess the border readiness of HGVs exporting from the UK • Communication: Dealing with any issues that occurred and communicating outcomes to all parties involved • Customs documents: Assisting drivers with their paperwork before sending them into the HMRC IBF or exiting them from site, depending on whether or not they had the correct documents for customs • Problem solving: Driving my team to adapt to an ever-changing site in circumstances that could be reactive to UK freight frequency, often subject to change at a moments notice Show less
