In my time at Tarleton, and in both of my roles, I have often leaned on Karole to ensure accessibility standards and guidelines were upheld and that policies were communicated effectively. Karole has a true passion for helping those with disabilities experience the web and all digital resources just as those without disabilities are able to. Because of her passion, she was more than a resource or enforcer, but an advocate. In any instance, she thoroughly and respectfully communicated not only the policies and risks, but also the value we were adding to the user experience. Her accessibility website is a favorite bookmark of mine, and a site I frequent often when in doubt. She has used her background in design and development to build stopgaps into our CMS to ensure accessible content for all users. In her time as EIR Coordinator, Karole reviewed vendors and products for accessibility and always worked to ensure that any resource the university had to offer would not discriminate against those with disabilities. Karole’s work toward a more accessible world goes far beyond her employment. She actively seeks opportunities to engage with communities of disabled individuals and works to provide them with opportunities to experience activities through adaptation. Her passion for equality, her empathy for those with special needs or physical disabilities, and her understanding of the technical processes and platforms needed to offer an accessible digital experience makes her a true value to our team.

    • Electronic and Information Resources Accessibility Coordinator (EIR AC)
      • Sep 2009 - May 2018

Per TAC 206 and TAC 213, I was designated the EIR AC for Tarleton State University based on my technical background on accessibility compliance for web technologies. Given my technical knowledge of WCAG 1.0 and 2.0, I developed instructional materials and taught classes on accessibility (e.g. web, email, social media). I consulted with clients and recommended accessible solutions to web content. I provided guidance to faculty maintaining distance learning classes. I collaborated with the CIO and CPO on accessibility policies and procurement procedures that would include checking EIR products for compliance with Section 508, TAC 206, and TAC 213. I reviewed vendor products and solutions, using VPAT 1.0 and 2.0, and reported to Texas DIR of our progress.Designated from September 3, 2009 to May 21, 2018.

    • Webmaster
      • Dec 2003 - Aug 2007

Started the position of Webmaster at The Victoria College as a student worker when I proposed a consistent web design across the Division of Student Services. Designed and developed the websites across the college, trained web maintainers, and assisted with maintenance of websites in Marketing and Communications while collaborating with Technology Services. Additionally, I was a graphic designer working on reports, newsletters, brochures, posters, flyers, programs, ID cards, postcards, newspaper & magazine ads, business cards, logos, tags, stationery, and promotional items. I created and updated the original news blog while doing photo journalism for The Victoria College. My passion for web accessibility began here.

    • Webmaster (part time)
      • 2001 - Dec 2003

Starting the Webmaster position as a student worker and transitioning to part time employee as I transferred to the university, I began the redesign of the entire community college website. Along the way, I started gaining graphic design and photojournalism skills, assisting with print publications and covering events across campus. I listened to the goals of departments and learned about their programs as I built marketing materials to their requests.

    • Desktop Publisher
      • 2002 - 2003

The Workforce and Continuing Education department contracted my graphic design services for a foodborne pathogens and food safety course to be used by area restaurants to improve their health inspection scores. Collaborating with the director, I turned a Word document into a textbook, cleaning up copy and providing a more readable, consistent, and friendly layout.

    • Teaching Assistant
      • 2000 - 2001

In order to better manage faculty and facility resources, as well as provide more personalized assistance to students, I became a teaching assistant for the developmental math classes utilizing CAI (Computer-Assisted Instruction). Combining my tutoring and computer lab skills, I provided math faculty with additional problem solving and instructional assistance.

    • Website Editor
      • 2000 - 2001

Turning a hobby into a student worker position, I began the web technology professional journey in the Division of Student Services updating a couple websites. Financial Aid requested a website redesign after reviewing my previous design work. I designed their website, the ones I was already updating, and received buy-in from the rest of the division to create a consistent website look and feel. After receiving final approval from Marketing and Public Relations, I was offered the job as Webmaster under their office.

    • Computer Lab Assistant
      • 1999 - 2001

I worked in various computer labs across the community college campus for Technology Services, problem solving hardware, software, and printer issues. I also assisted students with the registration process using the in-house web application, keeping recommendations for particular professors unbiased.

    • Tutor
      • 1999 - 2001

While I tutored many subjects due to my high grades in those classes, most students came to me for help with their math classes. I came highly recommended by both students and faculty as my reputation for breaking down walls for students who are more verbally inclined spread across the campus. Using my own techniques of patience, humor, and limited use of jargon, along with many methods I picked up from admired professors depending on the need, I was able to give students confidence to earn their associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, many of which depended specifically on passing that single class.

I assisted my former professor grading class assignments for all his courses. Most of these classes were in Sugar Land, so I worked with the staff in Victoria to send and receive work on a regular schedule. This allowed his students to receive their grades and respond quickly to me regarding concerns about their assignments.

    • Graduate Teaching Assistant
      • 2003 - 2004

Taking my skills as a tutor and my success in my professor’s computer science classes, I assisted my former professor creating more user-friendly instructional materials, doing copywriting and layout design.
