Karla’s work has included a variety of research and consulting projects. A significant component of this has involved the analysis of decision making processes in developing and developed countries. For example, she undertook a consulting project to evaluate the evolution of possible options for formulary development in low- and middle-income countries as they transition towards universal health coverage. Additionally, she was part of the International Decision Support Initiative (iDSI) where, with NICE international, she evaluated the evolution of HTA in a group of developing countries. Moreover, Karla has been working on a cross-sectional analysis of spending by programme budget category across Primary Care Trusts in England, and an analysis of the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) portfolio of grants along the translational research pathway (from bench to bedside). Before joining OHE, Karla was a member of the health economics research group of the University of Costa Rica at the Central American Population Center. She was the Chief Administrative Officer of the masters programmes in Health Economics and Banking at the same university. Karla has also served as a counsellor in price transmission analysis for the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Karla has a strong background in econometrics, statistics and quantitative methods. She has a PhD in Economics from the University of Goettingen. A native Costa Rican, Karla was awarded her master’s degree in economics from the University of Costa Rica. Show less
