Whether they be tigers or terriers, Giant Pandas or poodles, Karen has a passion for animals and deep insight into their behavior (especially when communicating with them in Mandarin, which I suspect is closer to dog-speak than English (judging from my dog's total disregard for anything I say to her in it). I know Karen from my time at WWF and she is also, needless to say, a great conservation leader.

It was the giant panda that brought us into contact. I mention an event held in San Diego Zoo at the turn of the century entitled "Panda 2000: Conservation Priorities for the New Millennium." This was jointly organized with support from my organization (the San Diego Zoo) and Karen's (World Wildlife Fund). Over 50 panda scholars were able to attend, and the cause of giant panda conservation was consequently advanced significantly. I flipped out when I first heard Karen speak in fluent Chinese. Those were wonderful times, and Karen received my enduring respect as a scholar, ardent conservationist, and superb organizer.
