PhD Candidate

PhD candidate in the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne, and a Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Alumna for my research into the motivations, expectations and experiences of international students studying in Australian secondary schools. International students in secondary schools are a particularly vulnerable group. They are young, usually unaccompanied by parents, and relatively small in number when compared with their tertiary counterparts; and some evidence exists to suggest that at least some of these students experience greater challenges than their peers in the tertiary sector. In order to best cater for these high school international students it is necessary to understand the expectations and experiences of these students and their families, and to contrast the differences between these expectations and the reality of the students’ experiences in Australia. This study aimed to fill this gap in the literature and to present stakeholders with information that may be used to improve the transition and experience for international students studying in Australian secondary schools.
