I met Karen about the time the new Healthcare plan came out and discovered that we would need to shop for insurance. She was an incredible help knowing how the healthcare plans work and what would be a best fit for us. In addition I have sat in some of Karen's classes - they are well put together and very informative. She is a great resource for any organization that has to deal with any part of the health care system.

Bridges Out of Poverty is a national program designed to educate all classes on the differences and similarities between classes as well as to develop tools and plans that help those living in poverty to discover their future story of sustainability. I specialize in teaching the core concepts to medical offices, hospitals, and churches. I give an overview of what a patient/employee/member living in poverty might be going through that would make relating to the middle class values more challenging. I can also help drive the creation of changes within the organization I am working with to help everyone succeed. Show less

Our goal: Supporting healthy living through improved health literacyOur mission: To provide families in New York with the ability and skills to live healthier lives, physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually, by providing instruction in necessary health literacy skills as identified by the federal government. As of 2021, we will begin a process of helping Kenya create a health literacy training program. How does Health Literacy for All help? Through ongoing classes, seminars, and online education, we provide people with ways to improve their health literacy skills and knowledge. Using various curriculums Health Literacy for All will address the needs of low health literate people throughout New York State. These educational tools will be designed for kids, teens, adults, and seniors, seeking to provide improved skills to all New York families by teaching someone within the home. Courses will be taught through traditional health facilities, but also through businesses, schools, employers, religious institutions and community programs. Additionally, specialty classes will address the unique needs of the mentally ill, the homeless, PTSD survivors, domestic violence victims, alcohol and drug addicts, and other sub-populations whose life choices may permanently impact their health.Health Literacy Books authored by Karen Laing. The Health Literacy Guide Series: Talking to Your Doctor and Healthy Living, Raising Health Literate Kids, For Teens and Young Adults, Stress- the Good, the Bad, the Ugly, Picking Health Insurance, Aging with Style (for those over 60). Karen has also written Spiritually Abled that helps houses of worship to engage better with those with disablities. Like what we do? Consider donating to our organization so we can provide classes to low income patients. Have a heart for a special class of patients? Call me and we can discuss how your donation can be used to provide services only to your particular focus group. Show less

Health Literacy is the skills and knowledge necessary to make healthy lifestyle choices, navigate our health care system, and respond appropriately in a public health crisis. Doctors and our federal government have spent over 30 years identifying what health literacy is and what happens to people who are not proficient in it. The problem is that only 12 % of English speaking Americans are proficient in health literacy skills and that until recently there have been no classes to teach health literacy skills to the general public. As an educator with 25 years of experience designing training programs, it was easy for me to see that what our country needed were classes in Health Literacy skills. Welcome to Health Literacy and You, a series of classes to teach everyday Americans the core knowledge needed to be healthy, Classes can be tailored for small or large business groups trying to get the most out of their health care dollars, for medical and health organizations trying to improve the lives of their patients/clients, or on an individual level. For a closer look at all that health literacy encompasses, for rate information, or to schedule a free consultation on improving health literacy in your life or for your business, check out my website your-health-advocate.com, email me at YourHealthAdvocate@hotmail.com or call me at 518-881-6405.
