My time here was spent with the field technicians and the soil scientists. As a field technician, I had to take soil samples for chemical analysis and leaf samples for carbohydrate analysis. However, most of my time was spent as a soil scientist. During this time we classified soil all over South Africa. I mostly worked in Limpopo and the Eastern Cape but also did some work in Gauteng and North West. I learned the South African soil taxonomy and how to distinguish between various soil types. Some of the classifying were done in existing orchards where I could see first-hand how the soil type influenced tree health. Show less

During the two seasons of work at Villa crop protection, I was exposed to the entire cycle of growing and maintaining healthy crops. I gained experience in the practical part of planting, driving a tractor with various implements attached and spraying by tractor and by knapsack. I worked with the Answer plot team. The Answer Plot concept encompasses trials that deal with current-day questions and concerns that farmers have. In these trials insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, micronutrients as well as adjuvants were used. Working on these trials was very insightful because one gets to see what the results are of different experiments like different dosages and what effects the time of day has on the efficiency of these chemicals. During the season I also took leaf and soil samples across Kwazulu-Natal and Free State. I had the privilege of driving from farm to farm seeing the different conditions and landscapes where crops are being produced. This also gave me a chance to interact with different farmers from these provinces. Show less
