      ■ Festival Walk — one of the most distinguished and successful commercial complexes in Asia, it is composed of a large shopping arcade spread over 7 floor levels, an 11-screen cinema, a 4-storey office building, an ice skating rink, which is the largest in Hong Kong, a major public transport terminus and a 4-storey underground car park. The immense size and high complexity of the project called for the involvement of a large number of public and private parties and the use of special construction techniques. Among all the challenges thus caused, the presence of two existing live MTR tunnels, over which the shopping centre building would be built, was proven to be the biggest — extreme care was taken to ensure that the adding of building weight and the heaving force resulted from the removal of the soil was carefully balanced throughout the process, so that the tunnel structures would not be damaged by any excessive ground movement. ■ Cambridge House — a series of advanced construction methods were used in the construction of this grade A, 36-storey, award winning office tower. The methods, which included semi-precast floors and stairs, jump-lift and pre-fabrication of building services systems, had significantly improved the quality, speed and safety of the construction. Successfully completed in April 2003 and setting new performance benchmarks for the Hong Kong building industry, the project was completed well on programme, within budget and surpassing every quality requirement. ■ One Island East — a world-class, 68-storey, grade A office tower set in Island East, a prime and burgeoning business district of Hong Kong. Mr. Kan was responsible for the early parts of the development, which included technical feasibility studies, development of plans and contracts and demolition of the previous buildings on the development site. ■ Peak Galleria — a major commercial complex located at the peak of Hong Kong, comprising retail and restaurant floors, a public transport terminus and a 2-level basement car park. ■ Western Market Renovation — originally completed in 1906 in Hong Kong, the 4-storey Edwardian style structure was converted into a shopping centre in 1991 following a substantial renovation, which involved the addition of floors and mechanical & electrical systems, the structural repair and the complete refurbishment of the interior. The restoration of the historical building also involved extensive use of steel structures and specialized engineering techniques. ■ Kwun Tong Bypass, Hong Kong — a 1.3 km, segmental pre-stressed and pre-cast highway bridge constructed by balanced-cantilever method and the use of steel launching girders. ■ Jockey Club (Happy Valley) Grandstand Refurbishment — one of the most complex and extensive building refurbishments ever undertaken in Hong Kong, the project was executed involving the addition of multi-levels of floors, stairs and long-span cantilever structures, and the strengthening of the existing structures and foundations all using structural steel. The project also required the upgrading of the existing building services systems and the complete refurbishment of the interior. The works were carried out across several racing seasons during which extremely stringent requirements on safety, programme and environmental impact were imposed. ■ Lei King Wan — a large scale residential development comprising 17 towers of 16 to 20 storeys.
