As a volunteer at Finca Ganadito, I am working with other volunteers and local community members to protect sea turtle nests from poaching. Finca Ganadito collaborates with local non-profit organizations to coordinate community outreach and sea turtle patrols. Finca Ganadito also participates in sustainable and organic farming and utilizes homemade fertilizer and repellant. In this role, I participate in night patrols to locate nesting turtles. We collect data on the nesting turtles and relocate the eggs to the ACOTPRO sea turtle hatchery where they will later be released. I also assist in developing the land for gardening and building purposes. Lastly, I am taking pictures to aid in their recruitment of volunteers.

I spent a month in rural Peru volunteering with a young business in the Andes. Andean Horses of Peru is a ecotourism business focused on bringing attention to the natural beauty of the Peruvian Andes. The project is based in conservation goals to educate locals about the importance of preserving unique habitats such as the pajonales. In this role, I helped scout potential routes on horseback through the high jungle. I also participated in general bioconstruction tasks and prepared the land for horse management as well as for planting a garden. I also took pictures to assist in promoting the business and recruiting volunteers.

As a REU Intern at Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, I studied the role of the MAP Kinase cell-signaling pathway in the whole-body regeneration of the marine invertebrate Mnemiopsis leidyi. I learned a variety of lab techniques such as confocal microscopy, pharmacological inhibition, and microdissection. I also participated in a poster session where I made a poster and present my research to scientists as well as local community members. I also gave a talk about my research to an audience of scientists and community members.
