I worked with other VISTA's, organization staff and volunteers to facilitate an academic summer camp for Kindergarten through 4th Grade children from limited resource families in the Ann Arbor community. In particular, I helped children grow their reading and interpersonal skills and taught CAN's Mapping program. The Mapping curriculum, which I had to shape to the specific strengths and needs of our 30 plus campers, focused on giving the children an understanding of the functionality of maps and their own relationship with geography. Some key subject areas were: scaling, map use and creation, cardinal directions, orienteering and the relative location of the campers world (community, city, state, country, continent, etc.).
