• Creating & Characterizing 3D Photonic Crystals

  • Developed a system for creating photonic crystals with 200 nm diameter nanospheres using the vertical deposition method to streamline the process of studying the photonic bandgaps of these structures • Achieved higher quality samples by analyzing the width of the reflectance peaks of 33 photonic crystal samples to determine if the layers were adhering properly and modifying the cleaning and growth procedures as necessary • Reduced waste of photonic crystal samples by using reflectance spectroscopy with a UV-Vis spectrometer and the non-destructive Fabry-Perot method to determine the thicknesses and layer counts of the samples and create a database of information for future research
