Following my semester abroad in San José, Costa Rica, I was nominated for the role of student ambassador for study abroad by the Augustana University International Programs Office. Through a detailed application process of essays and interviews, I was selected by the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) from a national pool of over 100 applicants to represent my school and region. On campus, I organized networking events between study abroad alumni and potential study abroad students, hosted weekly office hours, maintained availability in person and via e-mail to answer questions or concerns regarding a wide variety of study abroad programs, and participate in monthly leadership development activities with the professional staff of AIFS. I was an ambassador, not only for the program that sent me abroad, but also for plethora of study abroad program options available to students at my university ranging from domestic programs, national programs, and Augustana specific faculty lead programs. As a Colorado native, outdoor activities have always been an essential part of how I see humanity's relationship with nature. I worked various positions at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, from Arts & Crafts Coordinator to Counselor to Compass Points Director & Backpacking Guide. As a guide, I was responsible for receiving a new cohort of campers (ages 12-18) and adult leaders of all abilities each week and leading them through the wilderness of the San Isabel National Forest as a part of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. The skills that were required as a part of this position included: - Trustworthiness: If they cannot trust you, then they will not push their own comfort zone for you. - Responsibility: I was in charge of making the tough calls, especially when it came to weighing safety over group preference. Sometimes this included missing the opportunity of peaking a mountain due to looming thunderclouds. - Adaptability: Plans were often changed and changed again to accommodate group preference and sometimes medical emergencies ranging from altitude sickness to dislocated joints. - Communication: Technology is limited in the wilderness so effective communication was key.
