Coastal Planner
-
Jun 2019 - Sep 2021
As a member of Dudek's coastal planning practice, I provide our clients with the full-range of services needed to obtain a coastal development permit from the California Coastal Commission, including application processing, hearing support, and condition compliance. I also work with local governments, special districts, and regional agencies to develop long-range planning documents, such as Local Coastal Program (LCP) amendments. This work includes a range of activities, including environmental documentation; public outreach; and overall project planning in California’s coastal zone. A key component of my role as a Coastal Planner is helping our clients address climate change. Whether through LCP amendments or regional guidance documents and tools, I use my background in science and policy to help clients understand and adapt to sea level rise.

Led the coordination and analysis for the County’s Coastal Resiliency project. Responsible for managing inter-agency coordination in the gathering of GIS data and assisted the technical consultant with input into sea level rise models. Interpreted mapped information on coastal exposure and County assets to develop content and write a Vulnerability Assessment, which summarized sea level rise hazards and assisted policy-makers as they created adaptation plans, and informed the public about future hazards and climate science in an accessible way. Presented the project results at multiple meetings, including stakeholder workshops with grant agencies, California Coastal Commission staff, and other County departments. Managed timelines and deliverables between County staff, consultants, and grant-funding agencies.Worked independently and as part of a team to support County planners with tasks that included writing, researching, and communicating. Participated in an emerging planning issue of short-term vacation rentals, which included research and assistance in the crafting of a County ordinance to address short-term rentals. Communicated with other jurisdictions and became familiar with their General Plans and zoning ordinances to gather examples for the County. Reviewed past California Coastal Commission staff reports and policies and monitored the current agenda for items that related to vacation rentals. Assisted in gathering public input on the proposed ordinance, helped supervising planners prepare for and present at a public comment workshop, answered the public’s questions on ordinance development, and organized public correspondences for inclusion in Planning Commission staff reports in addition to data received from other jurisdictions.
