I first met Kaela as a guest of my halftime television interview during a Lafayette College basketball game. Kaela, a senior student athlete, was chosen as the Maroon Club halftime show guest for her accomplishments both in the classroom and on the field of play. She appeared so comfortable in front of the camera, I was tempted to find her a microphone of her own. A wiz at time management, Kaela had all the coursework completed for both of her majors (Gov't & Law... and American Studies) prior to her final semester at Lafayette, but didn't coast through. To her credit, she researched credentials to find some of the most prominent professors at Lafayette and took their classes, taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn from these published authors, nationally-recognized instructors and internationally-acclamed experts in their fields. Lafayette offers a generous five week winter break between semesters, but again Kaela was on the go. She worked with school officials to hammer out an "externship" to explore a career path in law. The externship program connects current students with Alums and others in the Lafayette community that open doors for this self-discovery opportunity. Kaela worked with a Lafayette government and law alum to sit in on classes at a prominent law school and spend time inside of a prestigious New York law firm. Out of the classroom, Kaela runs... and doesn't stop. Cross country in the fall, winter track, then track & field in the spring. Her commitment and dedication to her studies and athletic pursuits is admirable. Her small but mighty cross country team was honored for having the highest combined GPA of all the womens sports at Lafayette. Returning home after the halftime interview, I was pleasantly surprised to see an email had already arrived from Kaela. She was gracious in complimenting and thanking me for the interview, and asked if she could observe an upcoming Lafayette basketball game as a "shadow" to our talent and crew in order to experience the inner workings of a remote telecast. This opportunity turned into an informal externship for Kaela, whom, for no academic credit, joined our team for three telecasts and readilly understood the roles and responsibilities of all of those involved, including the administrators of the Lafayette Sports Network. Kaela is contemplating her next step after she's graduated from Lafayette this spring. I know that wherever she goes and whatever she does, there's an employer or graduate school out there who'll be very happy to have her onboard.
