Type B hospitals are situated in the larger urban centers, and provide inpatient and outpatient services in at least the five basic specialties – general surgery, general medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics,various and anesthetics. X-ray and Laboratory services are usually available to serve hospital patients as well as those from Primary Health Care and the local private sector. It it currently transitioning to type A hospital which are multi-disciplinary institutions which provide both secondary and tertiary care and are the final referral points for such services. At the Mandeville Regional Hospital the following disciplines are offered: Medical-surgical, Renal care inclusive of heamodialysis, Emergency care Gynecology and obstetrics, Oncology, Hematology, Pediatric and neonatologic services Peritoneal dialysis Intensive care with services rendered in a high dependency unit, Ophthalmology, Ear nose and throat specialties Psychiatric care and is involved in social reintegration buy means of a social worker. The hospital is also well equipped with a fully functioning laboratory and blood bank where all blood, stool, sputum and urine investigations are done in addition to blood donations, a radiology department where most diagnostic investigations such as x-rays and ultrasounds are done.
