In the Marszalek Research Lab, I perform a mix of wet lab and computational work. For my wet lab work, I started off using the Magnetic Tweezer apparatus to perform constant force experiments on single molecules. From this data, I was able to help characterize the unfolding pattern of NanoLuc in single-molecule force-based experiments. I have since transitioned to using a Single-Molecule Force Microcopy approach to further analyze NanoLuc-I27 (titin) constructs. Additionally, we are working to begin experiments involving chaperones in order to begin to characterize the unfolding pattern of protein-chaperone constructs in order to better understand the role that chaperones play in strengthening protein folding. Computationally, I use software such as Visualized Molecular Dynamics (VMD) and Nanoscale Molecular Dynamics (NAMD) to simulate protein unfolding while under a constant force. Show less

Engineering 101 Laboratory Teaching Assistant
-
Aug 2021 - Present
As a Lab TA for the Duke EGR 101 design course, I oversee the lab spaces in which new engineering students can come in outside of official class time and work on their projects. During this time, I ensure that proper safety procedures are maintained. At the start of the year, I assist students with learning how to use the tools available to them, so that they can earn their certifications to be able to use the tools on their own. Throughout the year, I am also a resource for the students to come to and ask questions and help troubleshoot problems with their projects. Sometimes, students come to me with problems I don't know the answer to. In these cases, I also teach the students how to find the answers to their problems, and I learn alongside them. Show less
