The ABS Initiative is hosted by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), funded by several governments and international organizations, and managed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Alongside directing Natural Justice, I also was the legal advisor to the ABS Initiative since its inception in 2006. In my role, I served as the legal advisor to the negotiating bloc of fifty-three African governments at inter-governmental negotiations on Access and Benefit Sharing and Article 8j under the framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity. As a part of my mandate I represented the resource interests of African governments and Indigenous Peoples in various complex negotiations leading up to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing. My mandate included advising and drafting the African position along with facilitating regular trainings and workshops in the context of environmental governance, environmental conflicts and Indigenous Peoples rights.

I acted as the legal advisor to the National Biodiversity Center was tasked by Bhutan's Ministry of Agriculture and Forests with assisting it to implement Bhutan's Access and Benefit Sharing Policy in compliance with the Bhutan’s obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity. I worked closely with the National Biodiversity Center and community leaders to draft Bhutan's Access and Benefit Sharing Policy and ensured that it meets the criteria of Bhutan's Gross National Happiness index. I advised the Center on sensitive and complex negotiations with multinational companies seeking access to Bhutan's genetic resources and the traditional knowledge of its communities. Furthermore I ran several training workshops for the Ministry staff and community leaders on environmental law and policy development.

The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) is an independent statutory authority established by the Government of India and tasked with implementation of the Biodiversity Act. In my role as a legal counsel I assisted the NBA in training, drafting and implementing administrative rules relating to the effective implementation of the Act in compliance with India’s obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing. I also provided legal and strategic advise to the Chairman of the NBA and was a member of the expert committee on traditional knowledge under the Authority. Furthermore I assisted complex contract negotiations and mediated disputes between the Authority, communities and large companies around the use of biological resources and traditional knowledge. Finally as the legal adviser I was also involved in identifying and supporting prosecution of offenders of the Biodiversity Act.
