I worked as a Residential Counselor for Stanford's Summer Humanities Institute, one of the many programs housed under Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies, which offers high school students the opportunity to experience a rigorous academic experience at the university level. As a residential and academic position, I lived in the residence hall with the students supporting their interpersonal growth and development while also acting as a Teaching Assistant for their courses (Session 1: Ancient Rome and Its Legacies with Profs. Christopher Krebs and Caroline Winterer; Session 2: Poetic Justice: Exploring Dostoevsky's Russia with Prof. Gabriella Safran). Responsibilities of the Residential Counselor include: – Tutoring participants in the course subject areas and providing support to instructional staff– Leading afternoon, evening, and weekend recreational and social activities– Building strong and healthy residential learning communities that enhance participant academic progress and success– Creating an atmosphere that fosters social growth as well as tolerance, cultural sensitivity, and understanding of individual differences– Addressing the range of participant needs and taking appropriate action when participants are sick or injured
