I work closely with the head teacher teaching a class of 21 kindergarteners. We work on their Math and English skills while assessing their progress every 6 weeks. I teach the students math while my co teacher teaches them literacy. I work closely with the other kindergarten teacher in the other class, each week we sit down and plan the lessons for the students. In addition, I prepare lessons not only for math but read alouds and do various learning projects with the students. I have built relationships with not only my students but their families as well. Our parents are always in communication with us. I also take on the role of head teacher when my co teacher is out. I am able to run the classroom successfully with 21 students. By the end of my fellowship I will have gained the experience, techniques, and knowledge to run a successful classroom with the help of observations and feedback throughout the year. Show less

I entertained the children in the room providing them with games, music, pictures to color and movies. I closely supervised the children at all times while they played and learned. I spent my summers working here starting June 2013 until August 2013 and again May 2014 until September 2014. Wimpfheimer student interns engage and monitor infants to five years old. I primarily worked with four and five year old facilitating story group readings and led recreational activities outside, monitoring multiple groups of children at once. Being a Wimpfheimer student intern, I gained the experience of running my own lesson plans for a week. I was responsible for setting up the lessons each day and leading the children through the first part of the morning, then allowing the head teacher take over the rest of the lessons I laid out. As a Charles Hamilton Houston summer intern I edited a website for Redirecting School to Prison Pipeline Project which examines the experience of students of color who start in segregated, impoverished schools and end up in juvenile halls and adult prisons. I assisted Professor Charles J. Ogletree, promote his book, The Presumption of Guilt: The Arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr and Race, Class and Crime in America. I also organized Professor Charles J. Ogletree’s office; cataloging of papers, legal cases, books and archival materials using MS Word. I was a summer intern June 2010 until August 2010 and then again June 2011 until August 2011.
