I worked with John at the Albert Sloman Library (University of Essex) and he was such a great colleague! John helped me out with the design and creation of a workshop version of an Open Access themed Escape Room I have created, and added a lot of small creative, funny and well thought through touches to some of the puzzles. John also played the villain in our Open Access Escape Room, which required a lot of improvising (especially with some groups who started to talk back). I gave John the general overview of what the villain would say, and asked whether he could help writing up the script (as a general guideline, most of what the villain would say required improvising!). We had so much great feedback from players about John, and how he managed to stay in character throughout the whole game. His performance really emphasised the story line of the game and helped take the players on a journey. I have really enjoyed working with John and cannot recommend him enough! He is reliable, hardworking, creative, talented and an excellent actor. He is also just a really great guy and nice to be around, which makes team work a lot easier and more productive.

As a casual bar assistant, I’ve been trained to understand the company’s licensing objectives so that I serve customers in accordance with the law, whilst paying close attention to operational policies and procedures. My general duties consist of assisting the Front of House team by serving alcoholic, soft and hot drinks, processing payments through the till, restocking the fridges, cleaning spillages, loading the dishwasher, among many other duties. I also maintain a comprehensive knowledge of all drinks and snacks the bar sells, upselling products and making recommendations to patrons so they get the best value for their money.

I ushered performances for a ~350-seat venue, welcoming audience members to the auditorium, helping patrons find their seats and informing them of any safety warnings or theatre policies. I assisted the Front of House team in cleaning the seating areas, the stage, the backstage dressing rooms and ensured appropriate cleaning equipment was readily accessible. I also completed the Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) Awareness e-learning course, demonstrating an understanding of how to identify and respond to security vulnerabilities, suspicious activity, or a suspicious item.

Completed a six-month Kickstart placement with the small company, contributing to promotional campaigns for entertainment industry clients. I gained skills in copywriting, originating content and sub-editing. I assisted with planning and executing national film promotions, including writing/editing copy and proofing partners, for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, No Time to Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Promotional layouts I authored appeared in The Sun, The Irish Daily Mail and various consumer magazines. Campaigns delivered media values in excess of £100,000 and multiple days coverage in national media. Most notably, I worked on the small editorial team for two issues of Amazing Destinations — a specialist travel magazine published quarterly. Across both issues, I authored 3 long-form features, sub-edited 13 regular features and compiled 4 others. I was set assignments by the editor and wrote unique content for each brief, and I liaised with the photo desk to choose suitable imagery for each piece. I also proofread both issues in full before going to press. I also helped to overhaul the online and social branding for all the company’s sub-divisions, including launching their new sub-division ClickGo. Working in a team of 2, I devised and wrote all copy for the promotional materials and product webpages. I also created and produced content for ClickGo’s social channels, averaging an engagement rate of 26% on Instagram.

Primarily responsible for writing/proofreading copy for library communications and managing the marketing campaigns for student engagement initiatives/events. This included producing social media content for Twitter and Facebook, presenting UX feedback to the Library Comms group and providing quality customer service on the Library Helpdesk. One of my proudest achievements in the role was collaborating with the Lakeside Theatre to organise two free events for a 30-seat venue. I liaised with authors and agents, and I led a social media and print marketing campaign across campus. As a result, both events had over 30 attendees and garnered a waiting list of ~70.Another proud achievement was assisting in the internationally successful Open Access Escape Room. I contributed to the script, helped lead sessions and crafted materials for a workshop version presented at conferences — the largest of which was a conference of 60 research professionals. To better measure the effectiveness of library marketing campaigns, I implemented the process of writing monthly engagement reports. Circulated to 50+ library staff, reports collated social media analytics, attendance at library events and seminars, survey findings and UX feedback.I also facilitated ~15 academic research seminars to student groups of 4-30, adapting communication and content for different audiences — ranging from secondary school to first-year university age.

Based on my work in 2017, I was re-hired to support the Core Resources team during the summer term to review and create online reading lists for the next academic year. This began as a temporary position but later transitioned to a full-time contract with the Collections team.In July, I assisted in relaunching the monthly staff email newsletter and served as co-editor. I helped to plan and solicit content every month, whilst contributing my own short-form features. From July 2018-August 2019, I edited a total of 13 issues. From August-October, to cover staff shortages, I managed my time between two key roles within the Collections team: Interlibrary Loans (ILL) and Print Subscriptions. For ILL, I monitored the team’s inbox for loan requests from external institutions, and I used Sierra (library management system) to respond to ILL requests from Essex students and staff. For Subscriptions, I updated the library database daily with newly received journals and magazines before shelving them correctly.Furthermore, I became the go-to person to deliver digitised print materials ahead of deadlines, digitising upwards of 50 pages per day. I trained 5 colleagues to follow efficient processes so that they could spend an hour per day on digitisations, which saved the team ~25 hours of time per week.I also continued my work in reviewing online reading lists, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail by correcting metadata errors, informing the Acquisitions team of stock to order, and linking e-resources to improve user experience.

Once my contract as a Student Production Assistant ended, I stayed on to work with the Front of House team. I primarily ushered performances for the 200-seat venue, ensuring all patrons had a positive theatre experience by welcoming audience members into the auditorium, informing them of any relevant warnings and enforcing theatre policies related to audience safety. I also went beyond my job description and took on extra hours to assist the Communications Officer. I helped promote performances by distributing flyers and posters across campus.

I aided the Core Resources Co-ordinator in creating and reviewing online reading lists during the busy summer period. The review process included: identifying insufficient stock and making recommendations for purchase to the Acquisitions team, correcting metadata errors, linking e-resources to improve usability and flagging out-of-print books. I also fulfilled digitisation requests, scanning book extracts and articles to be uploaded to Talis Aspire (reading lists management system), delivering a high volume of digitisations ahead of deadlines.

I managed ~15 amateur productions, acting as a liaison between students and the company, minuting production meetings, consulting on production budgets, advising on risk assessments and attending rehearsals to ensure adequate safety measures were in place. I also drafted and edited copy for the theatre brochure and website. The Theatre Manager praised my efficiency in managing my responsibilities independently. I voluntarily took on extra responsibilities, including learning how to use the Spektrix ticketing system and transferring sales figures into spreadsheets. Before finishing my contract, I wrote a comprehensive training document for new staff outlining a best practice model for the role. This document included guidance on production management, scheduling, templates for essential documents (e.g. risk assessments), among other advice.

I worked with the Library and Learning Technology Team (LTT) to create online reading lists on the new reading lists management system Talis Aspire. With the software being so new to Essex, there was a high volume of lists to publish before the new academic year. I learnt to use the new system quickly and successfully created over 100 lists, including all modules for two separate departments. Part of my role also involved training academic and administrative staff. I assisted in leading three training sessions and independently led two others, each attended by 20-30 staff members. I also scripted, filmed, edited and voiced instructional videos for students, promoting how students could use the reading lists system to better manage their course reading and citations for essays.

I delivered high quality customer service in a high pressure environment, accurately recording customer orders, dealing with enquiries and complaints, and fetching stock for pizza makers. This was my first employment role, offered to me after demonstrating a positive work ethic and time management skills to complete tasks at pace during a work experience placement earlier that year. I was regularly commended for consistent success in upselling new products and special offers. During the first run of the Winter Survival Deal, our store made the most sales in the county.
