I met Justine in 2003, through her position as Cultural Development Officer for the Townsville City Council. From the outset, I found Justine to have the rare combination of efficiency and knowledge plus a great personality and sense of humour. Justine was of great assistance when it came to navigating the grant application process, encouraged me to run workshops and then suggested I apply to join the Townsville Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) committee. Stepping out of my comfort zone every time - but learning a huge amount and progressing my career. I can't thank Justine enough for the help she gave me; her assistance made a very substantial difference to my arts career. And have no doubt she has similarly inspired a legion of others. Justine is practical, very experienced, visionary, easy to get along with and a great asset to Australia's arts community.

Justine was very supportive of local artists, and provided much practical advice to assist various community organizations I was involved with in writing funding applications. Justine's work and vision helped make Townsville the culturally rich city that it is today.

      • Aug 2020 - Jul 2021

This position requires me to assist a director and a manager with their daily activities, coordinating their diaries, keeping track of customer service requests and residents' phones calls, coordinate and minute meetings, prepare correspondance, write memos, coordinate conference bookings, travel and accommmodation, research background information, and perform other business tasks as needed. I also raise payments for the Engineering and Assets team and digitise documents using the Technology 1 data and financial management system. I have enjoyed learning about Project Management from an infrastructure perspective (as distinct from an arts and event perspective) and how roads, kerbs, bridges, cemeteries and buildings are constructed and maintained. I am challenged and invigorated by these new learnings. Show less

I was employed under a short-term contract to work across the research department of AIATSIS managing governance and grant funding requirements, budgets, and internal comms. As well as monthly financial reporting, updating contact lists, devising group and team structure diagrams, I drafted an online induction kit for new and returning employees, and set up a comprehensive online hub of essential information for all research staff. For the last two years I have been active in rural NSW primarily upgrading the operations of a community festival with 5-6,000 attendees. I set up and ran the social media campaign increasing the number of followers and hits by one-third over 6 months. I reconfigured and re-wrote the festival website to target cultural tourism and subsequently organised a complete redesign to add sales ability and modernise its look. I prepared its event manual, workplace health and safety for volunteers’ manual, and updated the emergency procedures plan, risk assessment guidelines, volunteer registration and media permission forms; wrote MC notes for two entertainment stages, and various other event documents that were not yet written. As part of ensuring the festival's sustainability I was successful in gaining a state tourism grant which funded a three-year strategic marketing campaign. Another grant I wrote on behalf of the community purchased new stage lighting, audio equipment and exhibition walls for the community hall ($50K). Separate from the festival, I have also organised two professional concerts in the newly refurbished Literary Insititute, begun a Home Harvest swap event and facebook page, and set up Batlow Events facebook page. I began at Brisbane City Council as Acting Creative Investment Coordinator, managing the Festival Sponsorships, Brisbane Heritage Grants and Helen Taylor History (Research) Award in Creative Communities. In 2013 I took up my substantive position as Creative Events Cordinator with a core portfolio that included Art Bites - a regular series of free multicultural and craft workshops; the bi-monthly Brisbane Twilight Markets which in 2013 was voted nationally the most innovative artisan markets; the weekly Clem Jones City Hall Concert series, one of the longest running, free public concert series in Australia, with audiences of between 700 and 1200; the 100 year old Bands in Parks program which presents open air performances every weekend across Brisbane; and the Lord Mayor's Seniors Christmas Parties, a high tea and gala concert for up to 10,000 seniors over five days. One-off projects I managed included the inaugural Lord Mayor's Seniors Cabaret Showcase, Diddums Laneway event; World Fiesta 2015 and CBraille – a public display of Braille using raised LED lights. I was also responsible for the concept design of the Cosmic Closing Event for BrisAsia Festival 2016. in 2013 I re-conceptualised Neon Pop an Asian J- and K-Pop dance party combining cosplay, lights, technology, and food, and in that same year ran the ultimate Brisbane extravaganza of street music, Fete de la Musique, which takes place around the world on 21 June each year and presents concerts in interesting and unusual places. For many years I had a wonderful time in this position collaborating with the arts and culture community of Townsville and supported by my team of five creative people. I was responsible for cultural sponsorships, quick turn-around grants for creatives, the festivals support program, and the Regional Arts Development Fund. I wrote and delivered regular capacity building workshops for community organisations and produced numerous festivals. These included an annual environment festival, Eco Fiesta; the Shakespeare Festival and Elizabethan Fair historic re-enactment day, including 4-5 day’s of education programs based on historic themes; a children's art festival, Hopscotch, which was also preceded by a 4-5 day’s school's program and which produced a booklet of the range of cultural and arts experiences available to children in Townsville; two annual Heritage Day events; the concept development for Write Up North writers' festival, Words on Water and Riverscape - two community cultural development projects; two series of Art Bytes audience development programs for young people; and the Strand Presents program of public performances; plus many, many other community events and activities. This meant I lived in Sydney for three months working closely with the composer, performers and staff of the Australian Opera. Show less

In 1989 I was given the opportunity to live and work in Seoul, South Korea for 3 months. During the period I researched and wrote a radio feature on Korean culture and lifestyle and taught English in a language school.I continued my work for Australian composers and the ABC, and was commissioned to write a 5,000 word essay on the renowned Darmstadt International New Music Course by the English New Music Journal Contact.I moved to Europe to further my music publishing experience and was employed by many European music houses as a copyist and sometimes editor. I also provided regular arts news items to Radio National and ABC FM. Prior to this I had edited and contributed to three editions of the Australian Fellowship of Composers musicological journals Ossia, and various articles for ABC FM Magazine.I became part of a wide network of expatriate Australian artists and musicians and this led to thedevelopment of the Antipodes Festival in Berlin in 1991 of which I was Co-Director and ArtisticAdministrator. It was a 3-day Festival of 'Australian Music, Film and Good Wine', produced inpartnership with the Australian Music Centre, Austrade, the British Council and the GoetheInstitute, Berlin. This was my first, and very ambition foray into event management! Show less
