Led a successful research project over a four-year timespan to demonstrate the quantification drug metabolism in a 3D printed controlled environment. The lab involved the utilization of microsomes to metabolize the drug coumarin into 7-hydroxycoumarin, which displays an ideal drug metabolism curve when data is extracted from a spectrophotometer. The research findings were presented at the Missouri Academy of Sciences in the Physics and Engineering Sections, other colleges, and research conventions. Two sections have been published in journals. Published papers are in the publications section. Show less

Option Care was a site heavily focused on specialty medication other sites would rarely see if ever. Specialty medication education, patient assessments and calls, state law projects, clinical help desk questions, and proposed safety changes were the focuses of the group. This site also commonly used pumps to administer the drugs which I attended an orientation for. An investigation into state laws regarding electronic prescribing was also completed. Meetings with residents were attended and completing patient initial assessments were done at the clinical site through phone calls. During the week of Midyear, I helped manage the clinical help desk in replacement of the residents. A project was done to help ensure the company was meeting ISMP guidelines for safety and proposed changes were made in a conference call with the company members in charge of these areas. Immunoglobulins were a major part of the Lombard office I was commonly at. Learning about immunoglobulins in terms of drug information and dispensing encompassed a large amount of the rotation. Using the company protocol and finding new information about recently released drugs, company educational material was made. Courses for a basic overview along with a more advanced pharmacy section were made for a company education/orientation presentation. Work was also completed in area of dispensing the immunoglobulins. Dispensing and making educational material was also completed for specialty medication discussed below. From receiving the order to final packaging, I assisted in all steps of the dispensing process. This rotation focused heavily on immunizations, patient counseling, and learning about billing/insurance. The amount of immunizations given at this site was in excess of 200. Every vaccination in the refrigerator was given by the end of rotation and I was commended often how painless administration was. When at the site, I was the only member giving vaccinations, counseling patients, and completing the paperwork for various tasks. Calls to doctors and taking prescriptions over the phone were done many times each day. Doctor calls were made to: help change prescriptions due to duplicate therapy, inform physicians of an interaction, change a drug to a cheaper alternative, or ask for more information to ensure a valid script. Multiple billing and insurance issues were settled daily. Show less

Discharge counseling was done for patients daily, mostly involving antibiotics and pain medication. There was a retail area designed for staff which required counseling on more common blood pressure and asthma medication along with hospice kit counseling. Projects were completed bringing change to the hospital involving: nurse training involving clean catch protocol and antibiotic reconstitution, analyzing data and moving forward changes in urinalysis and culture orders through multiple committees, and an overhaul of the Vancomycin dosing protocol involving retrospective data analysis and implementation of Q12h dosing exclusion groups and Q8h inclusion groups.
