For the past ten years, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Villanova University have engaged in a partnership where various academic departments offer their skills in order to support and participate in CRS’s projects. A new collaboration with the Madagascar office has recently been established and will focus on the water infrastructure aspect of CRS’s operations. CRS-MG was recently awarded a $38 million and 5-year U.S grant in order to develop the island’s water supply and sanitation systems (‘Fararano’ project). As part of this new partnership between CRS-MG and Villanova University, a Service Learning Course internship was offered during the spring semester of 2015 in order to contribute to this project. A large portion of the course is dedicated to the translation of various materials, from English to French, and vice versa. By translating materials from a past CRS project in Madagascar (RANO HP) from French to English, we are helping to raise additional money for the program by making available in English a past report as a way to raise awareness and motivate donors to contribute. During the second half of the semester, we translate the Villanova engineers’ water supply system designs from English to French for local engineers in Madagascar to implement. The process of translating requires efficiency and time-management (as well as respecting weekly deadlines), cooperation and teamwork, and great accuracy and attention to detail. Beyond the translational aspect of the course, this internship also requires intensive research on Madagascar’s history and culture. I often present my work to the class, allowing me to practice both my oral and written communications skills in both languages. This introduction to a new culture, as well as understanding CRS’s technical and ethical approaches, has taken the form of an independent research portfolio, which is greatly enriching and complementing my experience.
