I worked with Julie in publishing a highly complex language arts curriculum at CCC. Julie held a deep understanding of the content and was able to attend to editorial concerns of all levels, while also helping to direct design and balance the demands of several different departments, all of whom looked to her as an essential resource and central player. Julie is extremely fastidious and holds very high standards in all aspects of her job, from editorial and production work, to process development and maintenance, to communications.

I have had the great pleasure of working with Julie in her role as senior production editor at Center for the Collaborative Classroom for more than three years. Julie’s production-editing expertise, effective project management skills, chameleon-like adaptability, and collaborative spirit have made her an invaluable member of the Publishing Services department at CCC. Julie adeptly prioritizes many often-conflicting demands, sets and revises complex schedules for multicomponent programs, and coordinates the hiring, training, and work of independent contractors, which include formatters, proofreaders, and illustrators. She clearly communicates project goals during every stage of production, which enables project teams to work well together and produce materials that are consistently high in quality and on time. Her assessments are reliable and accurate. I also appreciate that Julie doesn’t hesitate to keep me abreast of developing issues when they arise and feels comfortable asking me questions or sharing an idea with me during impromptu office visits. Julie accepts responsibilities and performs them with limited supervision. She often takes on additional jobs with a positive attitude even when she may already be carrying a heavy workload. I can depend on her to turn material in a timely manner and with the same high standards she consistently delivers. Julie demonstrates independent thinking and a desire to seek additional challenges. Her initiative to conceive and document new processes and to apply them to the production editing workflows have greatly contributed to the development of more efficient and streamlined systems that have become standards in the PS department. Because of Julie’s willingness to learn, her familiarity with computer programs, and her technical acumen, I rely on her to help develop systems that allow us to bring our print materials into the ever-changing digital world of eBooks, apps, and online courses. Julie is respectful, friendly, and professional in all of her interactions with others. Production editors at CCC are required to liaise not only with independent contractors they manage directly, but also with project team members within our department (project editors, designers, illustrators, rights and permission associates, and manufacturing managers) and across other departments (authors and learning technology staff), and with third-party vendors (compositors and printers). I can tell by the positive relationships she’s developed and the feedback I’ve received from department managers that she understands the benefits of fostering a supportive, collaborative, and productive work environment. I consider Julie to be one of my best hires to date for all of the above reasons and more, which I’m unable to fit here. I have yet to find a project management, production editing, or politically sticky situation that she cannot handle with her usual grace, intelligence, and humor.
