To Whom it May Concern: June 28th, 2020 My name is Jakarie Gates, Former Chairman of the Morehouse College Student Government Association Community Service Board, and I currently serve as a 9th grade educator on the West-Side of Chicago. I am writing to inform you of Mr. Julien Serrano-O’neil's community service participation while at Morehouse College, as well as taking the opportunity to discuss his exceptional character and transformational leadership traits. Julien served as the lead organizer for an environmental sustainability initiative that encompassed the Atlanta University Center and the greater Atlanta Community. Through this initiative, Julien facilitated the development of various Partnerships of Purpose that allowed us to gather the resource required to begin such a bold and progressive program. His efforts brought together over 40+ volunteers from Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Spelman College to address the issue of climate change due to continued littering. The initiative simultaneously collected trash within the West End, Westview, and Ashiew Heights Communities. This initiative became the framework that registered student organizations followed on their respective campuses as a means to continue making positive impacts on the greater Atlanta community. Following this initiative arose possible adjustments to how our institution handles waste to ensure a healthier and safer environment. Under the leadership of Julien, we were able to host a group collaborative to facilitate an HBCU 101 - A Casual Rap Session about the HBCU experience and what life was like leading to college. The event was in conjunction with the Morehouse College Student Government Association Executive Leadership Team, the Bonner Office of Community Service, and other hard-working student leaders. We held the session at The Kindezi School at Old Fourth Ward. That partnership allowed other registered student organizations to make educational impacts on schools that have been frequented by our higher educational institutions. The schools that have been regularly visited by the Atlanta University Center are Dunbar Elementary and M. Agnes, Jones. We believe that we must branch out to other schools to provide those students with resources to ensure they have access to education and opportunities beyond their scope of understanding and that partnership allowed us to attain that goal. Julien takes all responsibilities requested of him earnestly with the highest level of integrity and importance. Julien has expressed interest in community revitalization, education, and youth development through extracurricular activities, notably, frankly, any area that he chooses as his primary focus will excel and be an asset. Julien brings an infectious energy and enthusiasm to his fellow peers and community. If further information is needed to help clarify Mr. O’Neil engagements, please do not hesitate to contact me at Jakarie.Gates@Morehouse.Edu and 312-813-1830

Julien is one of the most intelligent young men I have ever met and worked with to date. He was born with God given talents, and is the best multitasker I have every come across. I want you to read this here first, Once Julien realized that myself, the foundation and our partners came into his life and so many others to make dreams come through. I saw the hope in his eyes, and immediate action that led to leadership positions. I could hear the ideas flowing. Then he set those hopes and ideas into full swing. Julien, was appointed President of Future Leader's United After School Enrichment and Mentoring Program, he took that position to a whole new level, and took his leadership role seriously from start to finish. In addition, Julien became President of the First ever Pine Hills Youth Advisory Council simultaneously. Who puts in over 1,000 hours in community service hours, working the Pine Hills community while in High School? During this time, Julien mentored his peers and helped them to graduate, along with himself. We could all see that Julien had a heart for people and a willingness to succeed and change our community for the better. Julien's dream school was Morehouse, and it was the Foundation's dream as well to help him fulfill his dream. Our Foundation and partner's came together and made this a reality. We went through growing pains, new adventures, new inventions, new ideas, creativity with his larger than life soul. As the IT director for the Foundation's website. He has taken the time to make us look like a Fortune 500 corporation. Please check it out for yourself - www.unitedfoundationcf.org. What was most fascinating to me is that over 90% of his ideas worked with our goals and dreams for the future of the Foundation. Working with Julien has been a great joy. Julien has helped to positively change, grow, empower, educate and inform from elementary to super seniors. This ultimately, positively changed the organization, the outcomes in our program and our community. I am super proud today as I write this recommendation during the last month of 2020, that Julien has been promoted to 2nd Vice President of United Foundation of Central Florida, Inc. and will graduate Morehouse in less than 6 months.
