THE STORY SO FAR I established the Eyes for Africa Charitable Foundation to help overcome the issues of widespread preventable blindness in Ethiopia, and to transform lives. EFA has a specific policy of restoring sight to the “poorest of the poor” and therefore most of its work is implemented in remote rural communities. I lead a group of volunteers twice a year to Ethiopia to deliver life-changing free cataract surgery to men, women and children, who would otherwise have no chance of regaining their sight. Volunteers all readily self fund their own airfares, food and accommodation during each trip. EFA to date has performed surgeries over 1200 disadvantaged people, resulting in restored sight, and improved lives and livelihoods. Furthermore, in order to encourage long term health benefits and ensure sustainability, over the past three years EFA has sponsored a local Ethiopian Ophthalmic Nurse to study at Jimma University in Ethiopia to become a Small Incision Cataract Surgeon in order to perform outreach surgery in remote Jinka. Upon graduation, EFA hopes to foster sustainability further by partnering with the Zonal Health Department in Jinka in sponsoring this surgeon in outreach programs. Whilst Julie is the driving force leading the organization, she is strongly supported by a volunteer committee and supporters from diverse backgrounds who share her vision and who all work hard each year to raise money to fund Eyes for Africa's work in Ethiopia. All funding for these trips is raised exclusively in Australia through dedicated fundraising activities like our Gala Annual Event, the EyeBall, and the annual sale of EFA Calendars. Many Australian corporate organisations, and private donors alike, contribute by donating medical equipment and supplies, expertise, advice, time and money to support Eyes for Africa. August 2012
