We relocated from China to US in Nov. 2014, with both kids speak little English and as parent has no knowledge about US education systems as well as not familiar with the content and teaching methodology in US. Julie helped us understand the US education system and help us evaluate our kids' studying progress and challenges. She has been great resource for our kids to timely find areas that they are struggling on, provide necessary support as needed to help them catching up with the school study. Julie is also very creative and had put a lot of thinking and efforts beyond the class to find interesting way to teach the kids. Help them build interest and confidence in the study. She is very resourceful and knowledgeable to introduce the kids to good English literatures and study tools. Without Julie's help, our kids will not be making such a great progress, we will not be able to effectively support them as parents either.

Julie has started to teach my older daughter when we moved to the USA about 18 months ago. She did not know any word of English at this time. Julie is the best ESL teacher I could ever dream of for my daughter. She perfectly knows how to put kids at ease: Julie is kind, attentive to her mood and needs, very adaptive and understanding. She takes into account if my daughter is tired after her school day, not very focused on this day or if she has some homework to help her with. If needed, Julie adapts her class. Julie shares relevant information that could help her integration or knowledge about the American culture, as well as special events about our own culture. The relationship does not end up when the class is done. It is a pleasure to always hear them laughing while working. For all these reasons and probably many other ones, I do recommend Julie Kelman for any ESL tutoring with children.

Village to Village (V2V) was a recreational, and cross-cultural summer program bringing South Orange/Maplewood, NJ teens together with resettled Syrian and Iraqi teens living in Elizabeth, NJ. V2V was a series of outings and workshops, which included lunch and transportation. The workshops were facilitated by teachers, artists and a writer. All costs and fees were paid for by donations. As a result of high student ratings Julie Kelman was selected by Global LT to create, and lead Group ESL Outings - learning excursions to points of interest, and special events in Newark, NJ -- walking tour of The Ironbound section, tour and studio time at a Glass making studio, etc. As a Global LT Instructor my goal was to refine the English language skills of foreign born professionals, focusing on informal & social language, accent reduction, and Intercultural Communication for adults new to American workplaces. Family members' lessons focused on social and academic language. Show less

Provided individualized instruction in ESL, Reading, and Writing, customized to a learner's personal or academic goals. Students included k-12 learners, GED candidates, and community college students. I prepared parents for Child Study Team Evaluation, advocating for students and parents in the request for evaluation/eligibility for Special Services. (See a recommendation below). "Julie Kelman has been tutoring my son in reading since December of 2015. Since his weekly meetings with her, his confidence has improved tremendously, his skill for decoding words he isn't familiar with has changed greatly and he has moved up a whole grade level since they started together. Her insightful input at a recent child study team meeting for my son was part of a successful outcome. She is patient, kind, and is able to coax successful results." DF, NJ Show less
