As the first point of contact in the restaurant, I suppose one could say I'm the gatekeeper to the dining room. I'm responsible for greeting each guest, determining their dining preferences, and escorting them to the best table that will enhance their dining experience. As the hostess, it is also my responsibility to maintain an equitable workload amongst the servers in the dining room. Communication is paramount at all times, especially during prime dining hours when the dining room is at, or near, capacity. In addition to my primary responsibilities of greeting and seating, I also have taken it upon myself to help alleviate the servers' workload when we experience a surge of guests. Ex: • provide newly seated guests with dinner rolls and water • on occasion, as necessary, take drink orders • clear and clean tables The basic job description for a host/hostess at my location is simple on the surface: greet and seat. However, the person who holds the host/hostess role should also be friendly, communicative, and able to maintain an even temperament, regardless of the crowd or wait times. They should possess time management skills, not only for themselves, but also in consideration of the servers' workload, and the demands placed upon the kitchen staff, as well. Yes, as a hostess, I am the first point of contact you see at the restaurant. I am friendly, and I will welcome you with a genuine smile. I hope I can bring you to a table immediately. If I'm unable to provide an immediate escort, I will give you my best estimate for your wait time. As a hostess, I am the gatekeeper to the dining room. Show less
