    • Undergraduate Research Assistant
      • Aug 2020 - May 2023

During my undergraduate studies, I had the opportunity to work in Dr. Suanda's Communication and Development Lab, where I was involved in a research project called the CAT project. The primary focus of this project was to investigate word learning from referentially ambiguous input. Additionally, I had the privilege of conducting my honors thesis within the same lab, which further explored the topic of word learning. The honors thesis specifically aimed to examine how children acquire new words from referentially ambiguous naming events. This topic has been a subject of considerable debate in the field of developmental psychology, as most naming events that children encounter involve multiple possible referents, making it challenging to determine the intended meaning of a word. Previous research conducted by Medina and colleagues (2011) utilized the Human Simulation Paradigm (HSP) and suggested that children might not learn words effectively from such ambiguous events. Instead, they proposed that word learning predominantly occurs during naming events where the referent is unambiguous and easily discernible. In my project, I sought to modify the experimental design of the HSP to reevaluate the role of referentially ambiguous naming events in word learning. The thesis constituted an experimental report based on two experiments that I conducted during my time in Dr. Suanda's lab. Show less
