      • Jan 1998 - Present

A third generation architect, Julian trained at Moshe Safdie Associates in Boston MA and ORMS Architects and Designers in London before joining his father to design, construct, and develop buildings in London. Julian then founded de Metz Architects in 1998 and was joined by co directors Paul Forbes and Ben Knight in 2000 and 2001 respectively to form dMFK aiming to create a practice offering strong director involvement in all projects. Julian enjoys working in constrained and difficult contexts, has a solid understanding of place making, and is a skilled renovator of existing structures ranging from imperfect buildings to statutorily protected heritage assets. He is a skilled public speaker and presenter and has a particular interest in community consultation and the planning process. Julian is currently working on a range of large schemes in the office, including student housing, heritage restoration, co working, and religious buildings. At dMFK, he is the key director looking after new business, planning strategy, design ethos and continuity through to built form, communication and community consultation. He is an RIBA external examiner and part time lecturer in Professional Practice at Westminster University. Julian also loves anything to do with music, food and is a keen open water swimmer and is the co organiser of SwiMIPIM, an open water swimming event at Cannes. Show less
