General Assignment reporter and podcaster for my hometown paper, the San Jose Mercury News. Covering everything from politics to wildfires, business to sports, with a specialty in narrative storytelling and breaking news. Part of the team that won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland. Two-time Pulitzer finalist, first in feature writing for a series of stories including the Oklahoma City bombing and then in a shared honor for coverage of the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise. Formerly at The Associated Press from Cheyenne to Detroit to Dallas, where I worked as the southwest regional writer, covering immigration, natural disasters, the Oklahoma bombing and other major stories. Two-time winner of the National Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi award at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in 2018 for a compelling narrative based on body camera footage of the Santa Rosa fire rescues, and in 2017 for "Hanging," a 6-part narrative cold-case series and podcast.
