I joined Macquarie as it embarked on a project to rapidly expand its wealth advisory business and capitalise on the many dormant client relationships within the Macquarie network. Having already responded to an Enforceable Undertaking by overhauling their systems and processes, the Bank was well position to cater to a broad range clients within a strong internal compliance framework. The role involved growing my personal business from the ground up. I was successful in identifying clients within Macquarie’s existing network and my own personal network and providing strategic and investment advice to both high-net-worth and retail clients. In late 2018, following the Royal Commission into Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services, Macquarie merged its Private Wealth and Private Bank divisions, focusing on clients with $10M - $30M of investable assets.During my 2 years with Macquarie I built strong relationships with new clients and established trust with clients who had previously had poor experiences with other advisers.

      • Jan 2014 - Apr 2017

As growth returned to the business following the GFC, I was promoted into an advisory role as the lead manager on a book of clients, many of which I had worked on behind the scenes or on the sidelines previously, so I already had a strong knowledge of the client, their family and the issues they faced. This freed up the capacity of more senior advisers to focus on attracting new business while I was focused on retaining existing clients and generating referrals. During this time I worked on a number of complex consulting projects for domestic and international clients.

    • Portfolio Manager
      • Oct 2012 - Dec 2013

Following a sabbatical and international travel, I returned to BW Capital in the role of Portfolio Manager as markets settled and investor sentiment strengthened. The business had contracted slightly and was readying itself for the next phase of growth through relationships with international referral partners. The advisers were re-focused on business growth and as Portfolio Manager I was tasked with the end-to-end implementation of each client’s investment solution. Of note, I introduced a system for trading multiple accounts in models rather than individually.I was part of the team who developed a suite of marketing material that was published in English and Mandarin to assist our referral partners in their conversations with clients.

At the height of the GFC, when markets had bounced back from their lows and stabilised there was still significant fear as to the next move in markets. Business growth had slowed and I took this time to travel to Italy and study Italian before embarking on two residential development projects. To achieve the successful completion of these projects I was involved all aspects of project management including architectural design; contractor co-ordination; budgeting; sourcing; contract negotiation and complaints resolution.

    • Manager Client Services
      • Sep 2008 - Mar 2010

In the early days of the Global Financial Crisis BW Capital adjusted the way it serviced clients to ensure they felt connected to the business and had direct communication with the various team members. The swift impact the GFC had on clients’ balance sheets allowed us to reframe the conversation with clients and move a number of ultra-high-net-worth clients into Family Office style frameworks. Together with the Managing Director, I developed the Family Office reporting framework, including reporting standards and tools to communicate financial information between stakeholders in each Family Office. From a client perspective the Family Office framework is a more robust way of viewing family wealth and engaging future generations in the philosophy, wealth creation and careful management of family money. From a business perspective the ability to engage future generations cemented our long term relationships with these significant families to ensure both their and our longevity.

    • Manager Research and Reporting
      • Jul 2007 - Aug 2008

BW Capital was growing organically as the Sub-Prime Crisis struck and a new manager role was created, and two staff members hired, to divide the roles of research and client reporting. With the development of the team structure, I was able to refine the client reporting process for faster more accurate delivery, creating significant efficiency in the business. I expanded the depth of our economic publications to clients including a paper detailing the effect of Peak Oil on investments markets.

    • Research Analyst
      • Jan 2006 - Jun 2007

After completing my degree I was promoted to the full time role of research analyst. The resources-led boom was growing long in the tooth and the business was looking at ways to invest client funds while protecting downside risk. There was an increased need within the business for market information and commentary both to the advisers and in a form that was appropriate for clients which I was able to successfully deliver through close contact with fund managers and a focus on what was the important message for clients.

    • Cadet
      • Oct 2003 - Dec 2005

In 2002 following the collapse of Arthur Andersen, brought about by the Enron accounting scandal, the core team who had set up Andersen Private Wealth founded BW Capital. In 2003 I began working as a Cadet, 3 days per week, while completing my Bachelor of Business full time at UTS.The early years of the business were focused on cementing relationships established at Arthur Andersen, growing the client base and developing the nascent systems and processes into a robust Wealth Management business. My role was to support the 5 advisers with ad hoc research projects, gather data and run reports. In this early part of my career I learned the value of regular communication with clients and the simplification of information into manageable chunks for client consumption.
