The purpose of this trip was to conduct water quality research in various locations within the US Virgin Islands in order to determine if chlorophyll-a levels and potential harmful algal blooms could be affecting coral reef health. Data collected in the field will be used to ground truth and develop satellite remote sensing models for chlorophyll-a, total suspended matter, and phycocyanin. This project will utilize both hyperspectral and multispectral data. I was responsible for lab inventory, planning, and supply orders prior to the research trip. I trained two undergraduate students in field sampling techniques, water quality analysis methods (chl-a and phycocyanin fluorometry, total suspended matter, dissolved organic matter, dissolved organic carbon), and GIS and remote sensing data analysis/model development.
