Judie is the way a manager should be. She is always around if needed, but never comes even close to micromanaging; trusting her team to get on with the job while simply guiding and encouraging. She doesn't panic, and has a way of helping others stay calm around her as a result. Judie inspires trust from her team and gives it right back . I have genuinely learned a lot from her during my short time here at the WEA, and she has helped me navigate my first third-sector project by being supportive, honest, open, knowledgeable and unfailingly down to earth. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Judie.

Judie spent time showing and explaining what she wanted me to deliver and was patient, lending me devices that I was unfamiliar with to practice on that. Always cheery she was positive and upbeat.

The Children's Hearing System is Scotland’s care and justice system, which makes sure that infants, children and young people are safe and cared for. As a Volunteer Panel Member, I took part in children’s hearings, as a Panel of three, to make important legal decisions for the children who attended- keeping their views at the heart of every hearing. In training for this role, I achieved the Professional Development Award for Children's Hearings in Scotland: Panel Members at SCQF level 7 cover the following skills: leadership, teamwork, effective communication, analytical thinking, decision making, influencing and negotiating skills. • Area Education Manager
      • Dec 2016 - Feb 2022

Managing the Highland branch of WEA in Scotland, I directly managed 5 members of staff, and indirectly managed up to 20 tutors in different programmes. WEA Highland provided the unique opportunity in adult learning to really listen to what learners need, and create programmes that answered that need. Our strength lay in our ability to listen and respond quickly to what our learners told us they wanted. We worked hard to shorten the distance between a need being identified and the first day of learning. Our multi-partner and multi-project approach meant we always got the best for our learners; we made projects fit learners instead of the other way around. In Highland, I was responsible for a number of empowering and educational programmes, including our Women in the Highlands project which ran for over 15 years; Highland Employability, that worked to move people experiencing multiple deprivations closer to work; and our Highland ESOL programme that provided English language skills to refugees.
