•Lab-based research project based upon African Trypanosomes which are protozoan parasites that infect humans and animals - responsible for 'Sleeping Sickness' in sub-Saharan Africa•Explored the novel RNA-binding protein 5's (RBP5) role in the Trypanosome response to iron starvation•Tested the relation between RBP5 and TfR (transferrin receptor responsible for usurping host iron)•Project involved many molecular techniques from PCR and Western Blots, to Transfections, Cell Harvesting and Counting•Attended weekly journal club discussions with different researchers in the field where cutting-edge research was critically analysed - showing the importance of different perspectives in research Show less

Work experience at UCL Department of Medicine - Centre for Obesity Research The goal of the Centre for Obesity Research is to understand the drivers and causes of obesity and type 2 diabetes in order to identify new preventative measures and treatments for both adults and young people. •Shadowed physicians and dieticians in the UCL Clinical Research Facility observing critical interactions with in-patients and the confidentiality given for different issues. •Attended a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting where different professionals in the medical field critically assessed eligibility of individual patients for bariatric surgery - showing the importance of collaborating different perspectives and the sensitivity of each individual case •Spent time in the lab practising essential skills such as pipetting •Went to King's College Hospital to observe the MRI facility, given a short lecture on its function and applications Overall this opportunity enabled me to understand the application of science in the field of obesity and how essential lab work coupled with clinical work is entirely dependent upon continuous research to better improve the lives of patients.
