Naval Reservists are part-time sailors, participating in training activities a few times a month while continuing their civilian lives and careers. Sometimes, they may go on deployment aboard ships or in training establishments, often during summer. I have been proudly serving as a Naval Combat Information Operator (NCIOP) for several years. NCIOPs are responsible for collecting and analyzing tactical information from the ship's sensors and information feeds, such as radar, command and control, and other complex systems. We are considered the "eyes" of a ship, the first to observe any new developments that occur while at sea. I have sailed aboard the Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs), Canada's coastal patrol warships, on 3 separate occasions (the summers of 2012, 2014, and 2015). During each deployment I have participated in several high-tempo, high-pressure exercises and drills as part of the ship's crew, sometimes without warning and during conditions of little rest. Through this I have become accustomed to performing my duties, which require significant proficiency in technical subjects, effectively and efficiently despite several factors such as noise, weather, and the stressful nature of the job itself. I have acquired experience in supervising junior members as an Operations Room Supervisor, directing the work to be done within the Operations Room. I brought this experience back to my home unit, HMCS Discovery in Vancouver, where during several Saturdays from October 2016 to March 2017 I supervised the Operations Centre, which was set-up to direct and manage boat exercises. My efforts directly enhanced my unit's ability to provide security and support to harbour authorities. Show less

    • Web and Network Coordinator - Research Systems Support
      • Oct 2017 - Feb 2018

I provided Tier 1 support for the BC Cancer Research Centre, which has at least 800 unique users and about 1200 unique computers and network devices. As part of my duties, I installed software, conducted upgrades and deployments of equipment (both workstations and switches), and resolved general user issues ranging from printing problems to network outages. I acted as a technical expert for users, providing education and assistance for various low-level technical scenarios such as the use of Exchange ActiveSync (for mobile devices) and of Outlook. I utilized several management suites and software to aid in my duties, such as Apple Remote Desktop and ManageEngine. I performed configuration changes on Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange, adding and modifying users as required by the organization as well as changing access to folders and drives. I also developed a script to aid with the deployment of Windows 10, removing extra apps that were not needed by users. Password issues were the most common AD-related issue by far. One issue that arose often was software licensing. Many users were often unaware of the strict requirements that software developers imposed for the use of their software, so I worked with the rest of the Information Systems team to enforce policy and ensure that only legitimate applications were installed in the enterprise. In particular, the difference between personal and business use was clarified. Show less

    • IT Support Technician
      • Jul 2017 - Oct 2017

My job was to support, configure, and maintain company computer networks. In particular, I undertook an extensive project to document and catalogue all the stray Ethernet links on the company campus - no such comprehensive documentation had existed until that time. I also created a diagram of the company's networked assets. Much of this had been completed by the end of my employment. In addition, I also provided user support and assistance. Printers were a common issue in the enterprise, but by taking positive control of all networked print devices I was able to generate a basic picture of our printing functionality. I was also responsible for setting up new computers and accounts on behalf of the IT team, including adding new Ethernet links as necessary. Although not directly related, I also undertook a significant number of personal networking activities, to cement relationships between the IT team and the user base. This is a key component of any IT work, as a clear understanding of user needs, knowledge, and work process is crucial to provide an optimized experience. Show less

    • Kitchen Helper and Delivery Driver
      • Dec 2014 - Apr 2015

Being a dishwasher at a restaurant helped refine my skills in performing well in fast-paced environments. Not only was I responsible for washing dishes - of which there was a significant volume, especially during weekends - but I was also tasked with deliveries, often during busy times when the dishes would pile up quickly while I was out. Nevertheless, I was able to do the tasks required. I also assisted with food preparation and with cleaning the workspace at the end of the day. As a team member for Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, I was not only responsible for properly constructing and presenting our selection of food items, but also at being excellent at customer service. Dairy Queen and Orange Julius products must be made according to the recipe, with sufficient speed, and while maintaining compliance with safety and sanitation standards. Our location in the Coquitlam Mall food court, one of the highest volume locations in the region, ensured that we would have plenty of opportunities to build our skills in making and selling our popular Blizzards and Julius's. Early on, my natural ability to present a friendly, courteous face to customers was recognized, and I was placed at the cash point during almost every shift. From this assignment I obtained much of my experience in customer service, developing patience, calm, and keeping up a smile despite constant pressures to perform, the sheer volume of orders, and sometimes the strong objections of customers. I am proud to say that I was able to maintain my composure and our standard of excellence through these difficulties. Show less

    • Call Centre Assistant
      • Sep 2008 - Dec 2008

This job gave me important experience in working in a call center environment. I conducted over-the-phone market research to compile data about customer preferences, and I also conducted at least one political poll. There was some frustration, as many of those we called often refused to respond, but still I exerted the best effort to obtain good surveys and to fulfill the company's objectives. I endeavoured to communicate with interviewed persons in a courteous, friendly manner without compromising the objectivity required for the study, and I am happy to say that I succeeded, maintaining a positive attitude and not being discouraged by missed opportunities or the many refusals. • Seamanship Instructor
      • Jul 2005 - Aug 2005

The Canadian Cadet Program is provided by the Department of Defence to teach Canadian youth skills in citizenship, leadership, and physical fitness. As a Sea Cadet, I fully participated in the progran's activities and was chosen to be a Seamanship Instructor at HMCS Quadra, BC's summer cadet training centre. I prepared and taught lessons in seamanship, passing on naval traditions involving ropework, boats, and naval equipment to a new generation of cadets. I developed skills in instructional technique, fostered positive relationships with both my peers and my students, and monitored students' performance to ensure that they got the most out of my lessons. I also coordinated with my students' supervisors to ensure that their needs were met and that they could fully participate as much as I did. Show less
