Miguel CAMACHO

Juan Carlos consistently delivers great quality results in the organisation of complex multi-stakeholder, multi-dimension projects related to certification and standardisation. He led the effort that created the Florverde certification from the time it was a strongly opposed idea to the time it was a strong and growing certification and advisory programme for flower growers in Colombia and elsewhere. I think very highly of his qualities and recommend Juan Carlos wholeheartedly.

Responsible for the design and implementation of the Florverde program: a pioneer sector initiative that improved the social and environmental performance of the Colombian flower export sector, second after Holland. The strategy behind Florverde was to bring efficiency to the production process while addressing stakeholders’ expectations adapted to the local mindset. A resulting producer-friendly approach motivated managers of an increasing number of companies to commit to social and environmental improvements even before certification was relevant in the market of Colombian export flowers. I led the process of benchmarking Florverde with GLOBALGAP and interacted with Ethical Trading Initiative –ETI- and with other flower labels for the European florist market. I began to communicate the message of Florverde to the US market, i.e. to retailers (Superfloral) and to florists (WFF&SA, SAF). I was elected member of the steering committee for a standard in sustainable agriculture in ANSI-US in 2008.
