Bio
Paulo Schor
Joyce is a hard worker that learned to lead a group and teach how to be productive. She developed skills as surgeon, clinician and mostly human being treating another person. Her endurance towards objectives is amazing and as a strong malleable person she is able to adapt to different environment and situations.

In 2013 I became a first year fellow at the Cataract Sector of the Ophthalmology Department at the Federal University of Sao Paulo/Paulista School of Medicine. At that time, Dr Joyce Tsuchiya Melo was a senior staff at the sector, working as an assistant to the head of the sector, Dr Milton Yogi. Her responsibilities ranged from the medical stand point, as a coordinator for the medical team in both consultations and surgeries, to the administrative stand point, dealing with inventory, organising schedules, conferences and clinical meetings, answering complaints, solving workflow issues. As a young doctor who had been studying medicine up until that point, she showed the same amount of confidence to play both roles. And achieved the same amount of effectiveness, proving to have great people and organisation skills. We knew we could turn to her for support and that she would also stimulate our participation in the problem solving process, by displaying confidence in our ability to use our own knowledge to overcome both medical and administrative issues. I would say it was an important time for personal growth and to see that our responsibilities extended beyond the medical field. Also, to realise that one’s ability to follow one’s ideas and put them to work can have an effective outcome in the way a whole medical service works and develops. Dr Joyce Tsuchiya Melo played a definitive role in the Sector, the Department and in our development as doctors.
