In this placement, I had the opportunity to work on projects under Senior Associates within the commercial law team. Through being immersed in the role of a solicitor, I have drafted emails to clients, researched areas of commercial law and sat in client meetings. My skills of drafting legal documents and research have greatly improved through this experience and my knowledge on commercial law has expanded greatly. During my work experience at this firm, I was afforded the opportunity to shadow a Solicitor, giving me insight into what it is like working as a Solicitor. Being exposed to the operations and working practice of a law firm further grew my desire to enter the field myself. I was also able to accompany a Barrister to the magistrate’s court, allowing me to observe a court room, and gaining a basic understanding of what it is like. • Sixth Form Prefect
      • Sep 2020 - Jun 2021

Through being a sixth form prefect, I had to communicate with teachers, fellow prefects, and younger year groups to find out key timings, organise with other prefects and direct younger year groups. As a Sixth Form Prefect, it was my responsibility to ensure that year groups were separated due to social distancing guidelines. This meant there being no overlap in when these year groups went to lunch and also making sure they’re sticking to their designated zones outside. This role afforded me the opportunity to learn the importance of sticking to guidelines and ensuring protocol is followed, as the consequences if they weren’t, would be catastrophic. My attention to detail and time management as skills improved as a result of this role. Show less

      • Sep 2018 - Jun 2019

As House Captain, I was tasked with encouraging fellow students to participate in House activities and competitions. I also led assemblies for my House in which I motivated my peers to push themselves at school, to boost the reputation of the House. I also made myself available to any of the students in my House for any problems/ queries they had. I pushed myself to be a good role model for the students in my House whilst aiming to be someone they can respect and trust. Through this position of responsibility, my ability to organise and my public speaking skills increased greatly. Show less

    • Editor in Chief of school newspaper
      • Sep 2017 - Mar 2019

In this role, I was the head of a team of reporters who I had to organise and manage to deliver the first edition of the school newspaper. My responsibilities also involved organising team meetings, setting deadlines and staying in constant communication with the supervisor of the newspaper.Due to this being the first edition of the school newspaper, there was no infrastructure or protocol in place. Therefore, I set out to organise the team and lay down ground rules, so the operation can run as efficiently as possible, in the optimal way. This included setting weekly meetings and keeping constant communication between reporters and the supervising teacher. By organising the operation in this way, there would be accountability and fairness across the team. In the meetings, we discussed what stories we want to investigate and write about. We also went through what else we can include (crosswords for example). So, after doing this, I delegated the stories to the reporters, ensuring everyone had a story each to cover and set deadlines for everyone to stick to, to make sure everything can be sent off to the printing company.Set – backs started to occur as some reporters weren’t sticking to deadlines, which prompted me to call a meeting with these reporters to explain the importance of sticking to these deadlines and to not let the rest of the team down by not completing work. After this, everything ran smoothly until we received news that the printing company wouldn’t be able to fulfil our order. This was only a few weeks before our launch. This caused me great stress however I composed myself and started calling printing companies, organising logistics and prices. After a very stressful week, I managed to organise a new printing company to print our newspaper.Fast forward to our launch date and it’s a huge success, with dozens of people giving positive feedback. This was work experience that I gained through a family friend and was my first experience in the field of law. During my time at this work experience, I was allowed to shadow an Associate Solicitor and was also given a folder which contained a past case and was told to write a summary of the case including a statement of facts. Being in this environment for the first time made me realise this is what I want to pursue as a career. This was also my first time being exposed to legal language and writing, which I took a keen interest to. Through this experience, my writing skills improved and also my ability to work through large amounts of documents and creating a summary of those documents. Show less
