As farm manager, I’m responsible for all the agronomical aspects regarding the production of a 135ha turfgrass nursery with more than 16 varieties of grass. Comporta nursery is one of the four sod farms owned by the Spanish turfgrass producer Novo Green. It is located in an extremely sensitive area in the south of Portugal with enormous challenges in environmental sustainability. The nursery is specialized in C4 varieties (warm season), wich are much more effective when it comes to water consumption and reduced use of pesticides and fertilizers. It holds 16 different varieties, most of them ITGAP certified. Besides all the agronomic decisions, my responsibilities include budget management, water management, supervision of production’s environmental obligations compliance and leading a team that ranges from 11 to 31 individuals along the year. Totally rebuild in 2010, Vidago Palace Golf Course is a 18 hole McKenzie Ross design with bentgrass greens (Alpha), a Rain Bird hybrid (control satellites and d-coders) irrigation system and a fertigation system installed in 2013. It's a GEO certified course since 2014 and a member of the World of Leading Golf (a corporation that represents the most distinctive golf courses in Europe) since 2015. As Vidago Palace Golf Course Superintendent, me and my team are responsible for the quality and play-ability of the course. My duties include, but are not limited to, team management, anual budget planning and management, water management, decisions regarding pesticide applications and fertilization, planning and execution of agronomic operations, course preparation for tournaments, among others. Since I assumed this position, we have hosted several important golf events, such as: Portugal Senior Open 2014 (European Senior Tour), Bonnalack Trophy 2015, Patsy Hankins Trophy 2015 and Expresso BPI Super Final 2014 and 2015. I've improved the course's practice area with a new putting green, a new fairway, a new driving range tee and a new chipping bunker. In 2016 we were considered nº 15th best Golf Resort in Europe, and 2nd in Portugal, by Leading Courses. The Vidago area has an extremely hard clima for turfgrass management, with temperatures going from -10ºC in the Winter, and reaching temperatures as high as 40ºC in the Summer. It also has a drinkable water aquifer underneath the course, that allows the use of very few pesticides available for other courses. Show less

Harbour Town Golf Links is a PGA Tour Golf course, designed by Pete Dye, that hosts the RBC Heritage tournament every year. It has bermuda grass (Tiffeagle) greens, overseeded with Poa trivialis for the cold season. Located in Hilton Head Island SC, Harbour Town Golf Links is in the "transition zone". The "transition zone" is known to be the hardest area in the US for golf course maintenance. During my internship in Harbour Town GC, I was part of the maintenance team under the supervision of the course superintendent, Jonathan Wright. I learned about warm and cool season turfgrass management and course setup. I was given high responsibility tasks such as spraying, top dressing, daily course setup, among other routine operations. I was also involved in the major anual operations such as course aerifications and course overseed. During the 2014 RBC Heritage I was responsible for the course setup and pin position (hole changing) of the front 9 holes.Wile I was preforming that task, I was supervised by a PGA oficial to assure the quality of my job fulfilled the PGA Tour criteria.
