I had Joshua Slaby in my digital matte painting class at Pratt Institute in the Spring 2012 semester. Joshua was extremely hard working, never stopping until his complete vision of a project was achieved. I offer some optional assignments for extra credit, but very few students actually do them. Joshua was an exception--he did an anaglyph 3D version of a matte painting, a particularly difficult extra assignments, and mastered it. He has great compositing skills, and strong digital painting acumen. He is also very funny! When he turned in his final assignment, featuring farmer having a close encounter of the third kind, I laughed out loud as the piece played. Not only was it technically accomplished, but devilishly clever. I expect great things from Joshua in his career as a digital artist.

Working full-time at TPN has been a great opportunity for me to more deeply explore a role that is focused on creating good client-work as well as expand on the role of a motion designer in the context of a digital focused team. In my role I’ve had the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects. Some were large in volume with over 70 geographic dependent deliverables and others with complex creative content. I am also responsible for creating 3D animations that would visually adhere to the brand’s 2D aesthetic guidelines, as well as rigging and animating 2D characters in After Effects. Once I had spent enough time in the role to gain a clearer picture of the workflow, I began working on ways with the creative team to solve frequent pain points. Together we tackled issues stemming from naming convention and deliverables, uploading and archiving procedures, and updating shared project folder structures that are accessed by multiple departments to better serve user needs.
