Helping to determine the ecological role of pine marten in Northern Ireland through macroanalysis of scat, and assessing camera trap footage of their prey. This was a continuation from my honour's project upon graduation. Responsibilities included:> Assist research in understanding the ecological role of pine marten Martes martes in Northern Ireland;> Undertake independent work, but be willing to collaborate and collate data when required;> Report to the more senior PhD candidate and supervisor;> Form hypotheses and ideas on various aspects of pine marten ecology;> Research and write a literature review, assisting in developing ideas;> Explore scat macroanalysis as a method to determine diet across seasons, as well as understand the pitfalls of various diet measuring indices; > Develop an appreciation of identifying small mammals and birds by various methods and techniques, using the appropriate keys and reference samples, e.g. assessing cuticle imprints from mammals ranging from pygmy shrews to Irish hare;> Manage a large Excel spreadsheet, containing thousands of data points;> Perform statistical analysis in R;> Monitor camera trap footage of pine marten prey, assessing behaviour;> Present findings to fellow colleagues and interested researchers.
