Pine River Capital Management L.P. at its peak was a $15 billion global alternative asset management firm that trades stocks, fixed income, derivatives, warrants and listed investment vehicles. Invigorated by the excitement of risk and opportunity, I transitioned from investment adviser to active investor. Having enriched my management expertise, I sought and accepted this position with Pine River Capital Management to become directly involved with investing. I was responsible for $100 million in real estate capital, generating a 40% annual return. Using a psychology-based analytical framework built on my knowledge of stocks and behavioral economics, as well as understanding gleaned from studying thousands of publicly traded companies, I acted as the firm’s primary expert on the US housing market. I provided direction on US commercial real estate/property REITs, too, and specialized in a wide range of sectors, including US homebuilders, residential brokerages, building products, apartments, and hotels. Goldman Sachs is a leading global investment banking, securities and investment management firm. I launched my career there as an intern but, proving my skills & determination, I quickly joined a mid-cap exploratory team full-time. I conducted research on equity sectors including engineering & construction, homebuilders, sustainability/alternative energy, transportation, coal, railroads, electronic equipment and waste services, among others. I studied macro factors to fully grasp the changing investing environment by monitoring equity correlations, volatility measures & bond implications. I served as the do-everything guy: negotiating with clients & ensuring models were accurate before presenting them to leadership. And I was repeatedly awarded for top performance throughout. When the mortgage crisis struck, I stayed with the company even though the market had frozen. Never one to sit on the sidelines, I took the opportunity to learn everything there was to know about the housing market. I analyzed SEC documents, mortgage legislation, policy, supply chain dynamics & financial models. I combed my network to build knowledge around credit & debt so I could enhance my expertise. This led to me becoming the youngest research Housing Analyst at Goldman. I directly managed a team that operated locally & overseas, and ultimately worked my way up through the company to Vice President, Senior Research Analyst. I performed in-depth financial analyses & devised primary valuation techniques to make recommendations to portfolio managers & investors, allowing me to establish & maintain critical, ongoing relationships. I also led & initiated coverage of US Homebuilders and US Building Products sectors during this time & led the Global Investment Research Black and Hispanic Network. Show less
