Bio
Catherine Ward
I had the pleasure of working with Josheena while managing a feasibility study conducting research with Mauritian small-scale fishing communities on behalf of ABALOBI. Josheena is an exceptionally talented researcher and her skills in stakeholder engagement and deep-seated understanding of the social-ecological context of Mauritian artisanal fisheries contributed significantly to our study. She is passionate about the marine environment and the people who depend on it for their livelihoods, where she integrates progressive transdisciplinary approaches to her research and understanding of these highly dynamic social-ecological systems and their subsequent governance. Her commitment to promoting sustainability in sensitive marine ecosystems and working with vulnerable groups such as female fishers is commendable. Josheena is a talented communicator who can bridge different levels of understanding and convey complex concepts to diverse audiences. She is highly skilled at synthesizing complex data collected from an array of stakeholders to distill key findings for clear communication to potential funders and/or policy makers. Josheena has both the intellectual prowess and visionary capacity to successfully carry out cross-cutting research and I look forward to following her career as she grows into a leader in this field.

I worked with Josheena for a brief spell on Mauritius where I was an intern on the Lagon Bleu project. Josheena joined the team as programme manager halfway through my tenure and, whilst it was obvious that she had a very strong academic track record, along with bags of enthusiasm and a passion for all things environmental, it was also clear that hands on management was new to her. In that sense we were diametric opposites as I had significant experience of programme management knew little about her field. Watching Josheena absorb the knowledge required to manage a programme with multiple projects was hugely impressive. She quickly gasped the essentials of planning and resource management, recognised the difficult decisions that had to be taken and turned around a flagging programme within a short time period. The planet needs people with Josheena’s talent, enthusiasm and commitment and I believe that she will go a long way and play a significant and influential role in shaping environmental policy and behaviours.
