My research involves the assembly of novel Leptospira isolates using PacBio data, statistical analyses of RNA/metabolomics datasets and ecological transmission studies using metagenomic 16S amplicon data. I have been granted enough independence to conduct independent research into using gene content and multivariate statistics for serovar prediction in unknown Leptospira isolates. Additionally, I trained individuals in our satellite lab in Sri Lanka as well as provided bioinformatics support for collaborators at UCLA and University of Miami.

I specifically contributed to the Girls for Health Project, a joint effort between UCSD and UC Berkeley which focused on keeping Nigerian girls on educational tracks. I was originally tasked with using my knowledge of XML, ODK software and occasionally Python to set up a series of quantitative research surveys administrable via tablets. My role evolved into working closely with the in-country project leader, to train and regularly communicate with team members in Nigeria to ensure that the logistics of the project were sound.

University of California: San Diego Managed a staff of twelve writers for the news section of UCSD’s largest newspaper, the Guardian. My co-lead and I played an integral role in the biweekly publication process by researching breaking news that would be pertinent to students’ lives and by aiding our writing staff at every step of the writing process. We were able to uplift the content of the news section to something that students and staff would care to read, which was reflected in our increased online readership.

Essentially functioned as “mission control” or the medical team by coordinating with charge nurse in the admittance and discharging of patients. Played a role in bed management – determining which rooms/beds patients should be housed in or transferred to -- and fielded complaints/requests from other medical staff, patients and their families. Also ensured that the unit’s resources were appropriately stocked. I developed strong communication skills in order to serve patients and present a hospitable care environment for both them and their families. Show less
