      Shavers Creek is Penn State's Environmental Center. My role as an intern includes: - Being an educator for school programs for mainly grades K-4 that visit the center - Being a learning group leader for Penn State's Outdoor School Program, in which 5th grade classes come as part of their school to camp for a week to learn about teamwork and the natural world around them. - Assisting in animal care for the variety of animals at Shavers Creek. This includes the raptor center, which has 21 birds of prey (Hawks, owls, eagles, vultures, and falcons). Our duties include cleaning enclosures and feeding the birds each day. - Assisting in visitor center services, including opening and closing the center each day, cleaning, welcoming visitors, assisting at the bookstore, social media, and a variety of small tasks to help keep the center going!       As an education intern, my primary responsibilities include: - leading educational programs, such as salt marsh safaris and creature features presentations, that highlight the importance and biology of the salt marsh ecosystem as well as the flora & fauna found there. -Facilitating hands-on educational programs such as Terrapin Basking Station, Outreach Touch Tanks, and Terrapin/Horse Crab releases. -Assisting hands-on in our aquarium by feeding, cleaning, and transporting various organisms found in our aquarium. Some of these organisms include Diamondback Terrapins, sea horses, crabs, whelks, and various species of fish and marine invertebrates. -Co-organizing a large fundraiser and education event known as "Crabulous Crab Day," in which about 200 people come to taste crab cakes from local vendors, learn hands-on about as well as catch local species of crabs, make crab-themed crafts, and play crab-themed games. - Performing an independent project to enhance the education department at the Wetland Institute. My project includes the installation of rain barrels and further education about water conservation as well as social media campaign to encourage kids to get involved to make a difference in their local environments!
