Understanding what conditions cause paintings to crack is of extreme importance as cracking results in a loss of paint, and consequently, a loss of the aesthetic of the work, interpretation and appreciation by the viewer. Through a combination of modelling and experiments, the work aims to investigate the initiation and propagation of cracks due to changes in environment, and predict suitable conditions to preserve this cultural heritage. The projects aim is to establish how cyclic environmentally induced fatigue contributes to the cracking and delamination of the paint and the underlying preparation layers on wooden cultural heritage. The study focuses on panel paintings and the latest recommendations for environmental control within public collections to ascertain what effects they might have on the condition of these objects in their care. Finite Element Analysis and analytical fracture mechanics models will be utilised to develop a model of the fatigue cycling and therefore predict lifetime as a function of the environmental storage conditions for realistic laboratory samples as well as for real works of art. - Experimentally and numerically modelling the initiation and growth of cracks in seventeenth century oil paintings due to changes in environmental conditions. - Created an analytical model to replicate the historical environment within a room, which allowed the paintings stored in the room to be numerically modelled with realistic conditions. - Collaborating with research teams at Imperial College London and University of Glasgow (6 members). - Supervision of undergraduate, undergrad research opportunity (UROP) and postgraduate students. - Published findings in scientific journals and presented at an international conference.
