Working in the area of tree improvement and plant health, Future Trees Trust is a research charity dedicated to securing a future for broadleaved trees that produce better quality and faster-growing hardwood timber. As part of a small team, my broad role covers research activities, data analysis and project management. • Surveying woodlands for trees of excellent timber quality or healthy ash trees in areas of severe ash dieback • Design and establishment of field trials and seed orchards • Trial assessment for a range of traits including growth and form measurements, budburst timing and disease progression • Manipulation and statistical analysis of large datasets in R • Spatial data analysis and map-making in QGIS • Writing funding proposals for government departments and charitable trusts • Project management and reporting • Sharing our work through journal articles and oral presentations Show less

Working in the research group of Prof. Dek Woolfson I had a wide range of duties to the laboratory and my own research. I was part of several research projects designing, expressing and studying non-natural proteins in Escherichia coli through circular dichroism spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and live-cell confocal microscopy. I supervised undergraduate and PhD students in our laboratory and instructed on practical techniques and use of equipment. I managed the group's Containment Level 2 cell culture facility, ensuring the proper use of equipment and adherence to protocols by all users. Outside of the laboratory I wrote research and review articles for high-impact scientific journals, prepared grant applications for funding bids and presented my research both orally and on posters at international conferences. As part of my doctoral studies a undertook a three-month internship designing a colorimetric assay capable of quantifying both lipase binding and activity upon a solid lipid substrate. After bench-top development, I adapted and validated the experimental procedure on a robotics system to allow the high-throughput screening of enzyme variants. Working with Dr. Mark Jepson I used confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to study the infection of mammalian epithelial cells by Salmonella enterica.
