My responsibilities at this job included many things. Primarily I was to answer all incoming phone calls, and either defer them to the appropriate office, or help them in any way I could. Many times people would be calling in to make a credit card payment over the phone for their "in house" mortgages or rental payments. All too many times would someone call in crying or on the verge of tears because they had lost property, most of the time their house, to our company at a tax sale. On an all too regular basis I had to be excessively patient with a caller who may be swearing, yelling, or generally "ticked" about something. At which point I would attempt to explain the nature of our business and that we were not out to kick them out of their homes, which was the concern of most of the distressed callers. Beyond dealing with phone calls, I did just about every off "chore" that one could think of. Including bank and post office runs, groceries for the office kitchen, even keeping my boss's potted plants alive. This job taught me how to be very patient with individuals, as well as familiarizing myself with being "low man on the totem pole". By that I mean simply I did all the work nobody else wanted to do. Which for the most part meant all manner of different types of paperwork, lots and lots of paperwork. Show less

I was responsible for assisting in loading and unloading lumber from both delivery tricks as well was contractors and the everyday person. Here I gained experience using a forklift, using it on a daily and sometimes constant basis. I also learned what it's like to work a very physically taxing job, and better appreciate the money I made. I was responsible for providing assistance in all facets of materials testing in the district 9 lab. The objective of the lab was to make sure that the state as well as private contractors were following design specifications for asphaltic mixes being used to pave roads. We ran tensile strength tests, gyratory compactors, pycnometer tests, hamburg wheels, ignition oven burns, and a myriad of other quality control aspects.
