March 20, 2020 Dear Sir or Madam, Re: Josef Finkel I write this letter to recommend a fine student, Josef Finkel, for a position at your organization as a lawyer. Before Josef began his articling placement with our firm, I was tasked with the role of training the students at our firm. As such, I have been the source of a large amount of Josef’s work here and have spent a lot of time with him throughout his articling term. Josef has been an incredible student who never shies away from an assignment. I have asked Josef to complete numerous drafting projects, including factums, pleadings, motion records and various demand letters. Josef is extremely thorough and detail-oriented, and he often impresses me with the caliber of work that he produces. Josef has never turned down a task, never seems overwhelmed and consistently takes the initiative to learn more about my files. I have also sent Josef to Court on a number of occasions to test his advocacy skills. He has eagerly accepted every suggestion of mine to develop his Court experience and has yet to come back from a motion empty handed. Josef has also shadowed me and offered his assistance on some of the mediations, pre-trials and cross-examinations on affidavits that I have acted on. I value the input that Josef has provided during these steps in our litigation and I find that we often engage in very fruitful discussions that help me prepare my questions and submissions. One moment that stands out to me was when Josef attended at a motion in the Small Claims Court to have a pleading struck for lack of clarity. Though we knew the Judge would likely not strike the pleading, we hoped that the Plaintiff would be ordered to revise his claim. Not only was Josef successful in obtaining such an order, the Judge granted us around $2,000.00 in costs for a claim worth less than $10,000.00, almost unheard of in Small Claims Court. Josef then negotiated in person with the Plaintiff to reach settlement terms on same day and subsequently had the case dismissed. Josef has impressed me at every turn as a student. I am certain that he will seamlessly transition into an associate role given that he has dealt with several matters from start to finish, often with only cursory supervision. I highly recommend Josef for a position with your organization and am confident that you will not regret it. Sincerely, Joshua Hemmings, Lawyer
